Difficulties? Yes, there is a lot to learn when you switch to Windows Vista. Sure, it's a pain in the posterior end.

But look how pretty it is.

Microsoft added the annoying extra warning boxes to protect users from themselves. Of course, here in the United States people just click through the warning box without reading it (most of the time — primarily because we here in the United States couldn't be bothered reading another stupid monologue box created by Microsoft).

Haven't you heard? In usability studies, Microsoft determined that the progress bar in Windows defrag is not useful for end users of Microsoft Windows. If you still need a progress bar, you're not spending enough time looking at the Vista Aero interface: the lovely images, the mystical see-through borders. You're focusing on the wrong stuff.

You are not without choices here. You have at least three choices:
(1) Learn to cope with Windows Vista
(2) Switch to another OS
(3) Stop using computers

All three choices are wonderful. Only one of them has any drawbacks (and it's not the third choice that has drawbacks).

If your computer annoys you, get rid of the aspects that annoy you most.

I'm wondering only one thing: Why are you defragging your mate's laptop's hard drive? It's jolly nice of you to waste your precious time doing so, but why bother? Defragging someone else's hard drive is as silly a use of time as clicking through User Account Control monologue boxes in Windows Vista.

While you're at it, why not download Auslogics' disk defragmenter from download.com so that your mate can have a better defragger? Or, if you're into it, get him Diskeeper's latest defragger. Your mate would think you're a heckuva friend if you bought that for him.
