Although some people say they hate Windows Vista because they don't want to have to re-learn all their computer skills while wallowing in a GUI designed for smurfs, some people say they hate Windows Vista because they actually, really, honestly, factually and truly hate Windows Vista. There are many reasons that one could use as putative excuses to hate Windows Vista. For example, some people hate Vista because they hate Microsoft business practices. People hate Vista because Microsoft will not let most of us buy XP anymore.
Vista will not run many peoples' favorite programs, and this makes them unhappy. They are forced to wait until new versions are available, and pay for the new versions. For example, Dragon speech recognition will not run on Vista, and the built-in speech recognition on Vista REALLY S*CKS in comparison to Dragon on our old, primitive XP computer!!
Windows Defender makes it difficult to install software. For example, if you want to run drivers that are not "signed," you have to boot the computer manually in a special mode every time. Our "old reliable" Lexmark printer now only prints one page of a document at a time because of some kind of snafu in interfacing between Vista and the printer's drivers.
Most of the people who are happy with Vista are those who have not had a lot of computer experience, because Vista treats everyone like they do not have a lot of computer experience. Your Vista computer is probably much more powerful than your XP computer, and Vista would probably run MUCH slower on the computer where you are running XP, IF IT WOULD RUN AT ALL, which is not likely. But don't take my word for it. Put Vista on your old computer and XP on your new one, and let us know how it goes. We are all eager to learn from your experience. Afraid to do this? Thank Microsoft!
A lot of other people who are happy with Windows Vista are people whose competition runs badly on Vista, or not at all. Primarily, this is Microsoft, whose efforts to cripple competition (that is, every software developer except Symantec) are becoming legendary.
note: Microsoft doesn't kill Symantec because Semantec fights Windows viruses out of Symantec corporate customer revenues, and in most cases does not release information about the virus until Microsoft has been able to patch the exploit.
I hate Vista because I have listened to my spouse, unhappy and cursing her new Vista computer for the past 9 days, since her XP laptop died, and seen her spend a lot of money for new versions of programs that she liked on XP, but which do not run well on Vista, only to discover that many of the newest versions do not run well on Vista either. She also spends a lot of time not being able to do her work because of all of these problems. Of course, that would not be the fault of Vista, now would it?
Many people love Linux because they do not have to pay a lot of money for Linux, and Linux developers work hard to enable and inspire developers of other programs around the world to create great software that runs on Linux. People love Linux because they can see exactly how Linux works. Some people say they hate Vista because it is the polar opposite of Linux. Some people say they hate Vista because Microsoft will not tell them a lot about how Vista works, unless they send (even more) money to Microsoft.
But why do some people say that they love Vista? Some of them are people who sell new computers, and who need a bit of software bling that makes older computers seem antiquated. Some of them are people that Microsoft pays to say that Vista is great - Jerry Seinfeld, for example. Linux does not need to pay people to say they love Linux - it just happens. Oh well, as they say - love is blind, ignorance is bliss, greed has no limits, fools rush in where wise men fear to tread and bling is the sound that light makes when reflecting off chrome.
